The exhibition Cumuli – Trading Places, a sequel to “Cumuli – Zum Sammeln der Dinge” (“Cumuli – on Collecting Things”) 2013, takes place from June 12 through July 25, 2015 at the L40 – Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Kultur am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.
The curatorial team consists of the artists Robert Gschwantner, Ralf Hoedt, Jana Müller, Regine Müller-Waldeck, Simon Wachsmuth, Moira Zoitl in collaboration with Vanja Sisek, Nina Mielcarczyk and the curator Susanne Prinz. This time around, a picture by the Venetian painter Canaletto takes center stage.
The painting “Campo di Rialto” (1758-63), commissioned by the Berlin-born merchant, arts patron and art collector Sigismund Streit and now on view at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, acts as a starting point and visual background of the exhibition Cumuli – Trading Places. It is a painted record of a by-gone time. Today, the square’s architecture looks virtually the same, a seemingly static spatio-temporal configuration. Yet, what does this painterly document conceal? What does the picture tell us about art, Venice, commerce and collecting?
Reproductions of the painting serve as the core and backdrop of the exhibition display. Visitors can move through the spatial installation as if in a life-size toy theater. This spatialized dimension of the picture accommodates individual works by the invited artists. The works consequently form a level of commentary which relates to the references conjured by the painting and its copies. This can provoke not only new interpretations of the painted document, but also a multitude of narrative overlaps.
The exhibition will also tour to Venice. The reimportation of the Canaletto painting, supplemented by the artists’ multi-layered interpretations, will stage a direct confrontation between document and reality.
